Board Member Responsibilities
Board members serve as stewards of ONCB’s mission, vision, and strategic direction. Directors are expected to actively participate in governance activities and contribute to thoughtful decision-making on behalf of the organization. Board members should expect ongoing engagement throughout the year and a commitment to active participation in board initiatives and discussions. Responsibilities include:
- Participating in board meetings and strategic planning discussions.
- Reviewing materials and responding to board communications in a timely manner.
- Contributing expertise and perspective to board deliberations.
- Monitoring trends and developments that may impact certification and specialty nursing practice.
- Supporting sound fiscal oversight and organizational governance.
- Serving as ambassadors for ONCB and its certification programs.

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for service on the ONCB, applicants must:
- Hold a current ONCB credential (ONC®, ONP-C®, OCNS-C®, or ONC-A™) and maintain certification throughout their term of service.
- Ability to serve a full term. Board members serve a three-year term beginning January 1. Directors may be considered for an additional term based on board needs and performance.
- Demonstrate the ability to fulfill the responsibilities and time commitment associated with board service.
- Comply with ONCB confidentiality and conflict-of-interest requirements.
Application Process
Application Opens: June 2026
Application Deadline: August 14, 2026
Board Terms Begin: January 1, 2027
Interested candidates will be asked to submit:
- A completed application.
- A current curriculum vitae or résumé.
- Two professional letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant’s leadership abilities and service experience; one must be from a current supervisor.
- A nominee statement describing leadership experience, relevant qualifications, and interest in serving on the ONCB Board.
Review and Selection Process: Blinded applications will be reviewed by ONCB leadership to assess each candidate’s qualifications, experience, and alignment with the competencies needed for effective board service. Qualified candidates may be invited to participate in an interview as part of the selection process. Interviews provide an opportunity for applicants to discuss their leadership experiences, strategic thinking abilities, and interest in supporting ONCB’s mission and future direction. The Board of Directors will review application materials and interview feedback before making final selections.
