ONCB committees play a vital role in maintaining the quality, integrity, and continued success of ONCB certification programs. Committee volunteers contribute their expertise, collaborate with peers from across the country, and help ensure that ONCB certifications remain relevant, credible, and valuable to orthopaedic nurses and the patients they serve.
Committee Member Expectations
Committee appointments are for a three-year term, with the opportunity to serve an additional term. Committee members are expected to:

Exam Prep Committee
The Exam Prep Committee develops and maintains resources designed to help nurses prepare for ONCB certification examinations. Committee members contribute to the creation and review of educational materials, including practice examinations, flashcards, and other study tools. Volunteers also evaluate existing resources and recommend updates to ensure content remains current and relevant for certification candidates.
Recertification Committee
The Recertification Committee supports the ongoing integrity of ONCB credentials by reviewing recertification audits and evaluating continuing education activities. Committee members help ensure that recertification standards are applied consistently and fairly.
New committee members are paired with experienced volunteers who provide mentorship and training. Because members typically review only a limited number of audits each year, this committee offers a meaningful volunteer opportunity with a relatively modest time commitment. Responsibilities include:
- Reviewing recertification audit submissions.
- Supporting quality assurance activities related to certification maintenance.
- Reviewing and updating the ONCB BONEafide™ free and low cost continuing education resource list.
- Participating in committee discussions regarding recertification policies and processes.
Test Committee
The Test Committee is responsible for supporting the development, maintenance, and ongoing evaluation of ONCB certification examinations. Committee members work closely with ONCB staff and testing experts to help ensure that certification examinations remain psychometrically sound, current, and reflective of contemporary orthopaedic nursing practice. Responsibilities include:
-
- Reviewing examination performance data and item statistics.
- Recommending policy updates related to examination administration and maintenance.
- Reviewing and recommending examination blueprints and test specifications.
- Participating in item review, form validation, and examination maintenance activities.
- Mentoring item writers and newer Test Committee members.
- Supporting major examination development initiatives, including Job Task Analyses and blueprint updates.
Committee Leadership Opportunities
Each committee is led by a Chair and supported by a Vice-Chair.
Committee Chairs
Committee Chairs provide leadership and direction for committee activities. Responsibilities include facilitating meetings, working with ONCB staff to review volunteer applications, interviewing prospective committee members, and reporting committee activities to the Board of Directors. Committee Chairs also serve as ex-officio members of the ONCB Board of Directors.
Committee Vice-Chairs
Vice-Chairs support the work of the Chair and committee throughout the year while preparing for future leadership opportunities within ONCB.
